>> top stories we are following on this monday, december 9th. it is cold outside-- here is a live look outside at our mount tam cam. a freeze warning is in affect this morning for most of the bay area. we'll tell you how long this cold snap is going to last. >> the continuing cold weather has killed at least five homeless people over the past two weeks. what some big cities are doing to keep those living on the street safe. >> and it was the battle of the west rivals--niners and seahawks at candlestick. the second to last game of the season at the stick and san francisco sends the seahawks home. we have all the excitement from the stick. >> starting things off here in the weather center this monday morning december 9th.

>> it is low 20s out the door. we have not had a morning low. it is between six and seven. we have the freeze warnings and affect. san francisco is not impacted by this. hayward is already at freezing. oakland is at 31 degrees. upper 20s from those of you in san jose. record lows are definitely possible for this morning and the freeze warning will be reissued into tomorrow morning. the temperatures hopefully will start to climb in we will see a warming trend into the ladder part of the week. we may see showers, a 10% chance. i will have more on that coming up.

>> cold temperatures are expected to continue and there is a freeze warning issued for some bay area cities. the coldest will be between six and seven. the temperatures will be below where they should be. here is a look at your afternoon highs. with only climb into the 40's and 50's and it will be sunny. the cold air will fill a painful on your face. what was the upper 40's for pleasanton and livermore. a high of 47 degrees. satellite and radar shows clear skies always still have the cooler air mass that is still an affect. we should say partly cloudy conditions. we're going to be back in the '60s as we head into the weekend.

this is something that we're looking for two. >> there is a problem on the nimitz freeway. there is a lot of debris that has been spilled on the road. they have san the beryl's everywhere. the chp and caltran are at the scene. malangas should be cleared shortly but as of right now we are not seen a note delays. the good news is bad and just a few minutes you are good to go. >> we have a couple of minor accidents but that is the only one that has the potential to impact your commute. the bay bridge is moving well in all directions. the san mateo bridges problem free in both directions. with the rain that we saw over the weekend of the

precipitation, the moisture on the ground i would not be surprised a black ice. >> thousands of people were stranded last night due to airport delays and cancellations. and they are expecting 500 more cancellations for today. cold weather is to blame and flight aware dot com says that over two thousand flights have been canceled as of sunday afternoon with over six thousand delays. the dallas fort worth airport has been hit particularly hard. the airport says that more than 400 departures were canceled sunday and some people have been waiting to fly out since thursday night. to ease the pain some airlines are giving away free refreshments and bringing in entertainment for travelers. s >> though the weather is expected to be cold, fires won't be an option for many bay area residents looking to keep warm. its a spare the air day.

that bans all wood burning throughout the region. using fireplaces, woodstoves, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits or any other wood-burning device is illegal during a winter spare the air alert. the only exception is homes where woodstoves or fireplaces are the only heat source. this ban comes as the national weather service issues another freeze warning for the bay area. >> the bay has been seeing thermometers drop to record lows over recent nights.with fatal results. at least five homeless people have died over the past two weeks. the most recent death happened behind an empty storefront on village parkway in dublin. police say a citizen found the man at around 12:30 friday afternoon. while the alameda county coroner hasn't determined a cause of death. they are investigating the possibility that it was due to exposure. many outreach workers around the bay area are working hard to steer people into shelters. also those who live on the street are being checked up on >> we have asked officers to

to play in the game. the seahawks would get a field goal.and the niners would need a big play.to beat the hawks' narrow lead. and they would get it from frank gore.winning the game over the seahawks at 19-17 >> this was the second to last regular season game at candlestick park. the 49ers are going to tampa bay next week to take on the buccaneers. >> unrelatedly, police say one person was hit in the head with a bottle near candlestick park yesterday afternoon. the male victim was hit at gillman avenue and bill walsh way at about 1:30 p.m. police say he suffered minor cuts and was treated at the scene by medical personnel, no one was arrested and the incident was being investigated. >> all lanes of u.s. highway 101 in santa clara have reopened this morning after a crash blocked the three left lanes. california highway patrol says the three car crash happened just before midnight sunday on northbound highway 101.

this was south of great america parkway. one of the three cars was engulfed in flames, but all the people inside were able to escape the car. injuries have been reported, but everyone hurt is expected to survive. >> the family of a man in critical condition from a hit-and-run is looking for the driver. pepe bolorinos was struck on the corner of oak and scott in san francisco's lower height neighborhood while he was crossing the street tuesday night. witnesses say the car ran a red light at the time of the accident which left bolorinos in intensive care. the driver also hit a parked car and was reportedly fleeing from the scene. the car is described as a silver four door sedan and part of the bumper was damaged in the accident. family members are urging anyone with information contact san francisco police. >> south africa prepares for the memorial service of former president nelson mandela. we'll tell you the latest on the memoral plans >> president obama and first lady michelle obama will leave for south affirca to attend the memorial service for nelson mandela.

>> now to the latest on the worldwide mourning of nelson mandela. yesterday marked the beginning of a week's worth of memorial events honoring the former south african president. flowers and memorabilia have been set up all across south africa. mandela died late thursday at 95. the coming days will be filled with symbolism and solidarity. as well as a mix of western and african traditions. this is all what cnn had on

lt. gen. solomon makgale said monday officers would "make sure people are able to grieve in a safe environment." makgale said south african police, diplomats and intelligence services had been in touch protect visiting heads of state, including u.s. more than 80,000 mourners are expected to attend the memorial tuesday for the anti-apartheid hero at a stadium in the soweto township where mandela made his last public appearance at the closing ceremony of the 2010 soccer world cup. officials say they'll block access if too many people come to the stadium. overflow sites are planned. >> president obama and the first lady will be among the dozens of dignitaries honoring mandela tomorrow in south africa. a soccer stadium will serve as the backdrop for a national memorial service >> former presidents george w bush, bill clinton and jimmy carter also expected to attend. they will join tens of thousands of mourners at the johanessburg stadium. >> u.s. defense secretary chuck hagel has arrived in pakistan for meetings with prime minister nawaz sharif and other officials. pentagon spokesman carl woog says hagel is looking forward to "candid and about ways to address common stability of neighboring afghanistan. u.s. relations with pakistan have seesawed because of drone strikes and military operations along the

pakistan-afghanistan border, though there have been some signs of improvement. sharif met with president barack the last pentagon chief to gates in january 2010. hagel flew to pakistan from afghanistan, where he visited u.s. troops but president hamid karzai, who has rankled the u.s. by refusing to sign a security agreement before year's end. >> eight major tech giants, many from the bay area, have called for tighter controls on government surveillance. the companies, including google, facebook and twitter are joining forces to argue there should be reforms in the way the united states snoops on people. they issued an open letter to president barack obama, saying that while governments have a duty to protect citizens, recent revelations have "highlighted the urgent need to reform government surveillance practices worldwide." the letter published monday said: "the balance in many countries has tipped too far in favor of the state and away from the rights of the individual - rights that are enshrined in our constitution." the letter follow revelations by former national security agency contractor edward snowden, who leaked details of the secret programs that critics say violate privacy rights >> i will highlight more of the weather when we return.

surprise that we do have a freeze warnings and affect. the national weather service will issue a freeze warning to o'clock tonight into tomorrow morning. pass that we will see warm weather. >> afternoon highs for today will be plenty of the upper 40's, low 50's. you can expect mostly sunny skies. 52 degrees for san jose and 474 milpitas. upper 40's will be very common for vallejo and walnut creek pripet downtown san francisco stance of the low 50's. we're seeing clear skies around the bay and we also have the offshore winds. the dryer air mass that we all can feel. what a

winter cold and never seen before in the united states has invaded new york city. rutgers university insect biologists say the species is well documented in asia but was never confirmed in the united states until now. they suspect the little critter was likely a stowaway in the soil from ornamental plants. the newcomer was first spotted in new york in 2012 by an exterminator working on the high line, an elevated park, on manhattan's west side. the scientists say while it is too soon to predict the impact, there is probably little cause for concern. >> fans of "fast and furious star" paul walker gathered sunday to pay tribute to the actor at the site where he died. walker and his friend roger rodas were killed last week, after a porsche rodas was driving crashed into a light pole and burst into flames. today's tribute was organized through social media. some walker fans drove up in souped-up cars, just like one he used in the films. paul vercammen was there. >> the above kind of the things that he did do, his charity and any time something happens in the

on the federal railroad administration to take steps to prevent another deadly train accident. senators chuck schumer and richard blumenthal claim the n-t-s-b recommended cameras be installed on both the inside and outside of trains five years ago, but nothing has been done. a commuter train derailed in new york last week, killing four people and injuring 67 others. r >> "as we move forward from the crash we have to focus on the lessons we learned in the past week and make sure that these things don't happen again. reports are now pointing to human error as the cause of the crash. it's now generally accepted that the engineer "nodding off" during the trip, possibly due to what's called highway hypnosis - when you see so many things go by quickly and repeatedly you get lulled into sleep." >> schumer says the cameras would monitor train crew members and provide video evidence in the event of a

crash. currently, amtrak and california's metrolink commuter rail trains have cameras installed. >> lake tahoe might soon be using ferries for transportation around the lake. officials are hoping that.by the summer of 2016.they'll have a pair of 120-passenger ferries shuttling people from the south shore to the north shore in less than a half hour. the ferries would travel between marinas at south lake tahoe and tahoe city. it's estimated that. during peak summer travel. the boats would make eight trips a day. >> the merger between american airlines and u- s airways is given the go-ahead -- this is after the supreme court refused to hear a request from a consumer group that wanted to block the deal. the group feared the merger would raise ticket prices, and limit customers' choices. american and u- s airways could complete the deal -

and los gatos and menlo park. the temperatures could drop off another five degrees as we approach sunrise. there's no surprise that a freeze warnings and affect until 9:00 a.m.. it will be real issue for 10:00 p.m. tonight and stretch into tomorrow morning. pretty much, all the bay area is affected by this. again, frost, is a concern. allow yourself extra time. >> as we head into the afternoon the afternoon will be a little bit warmer with plenty of sunshine. mountain view will hit a high of 47 degrees. a sunny day ahead and walnut creek with a high of 48 degrees. we are going to be dealing with light offshore wind but that will continue into the afternoon. this dryer air mass will let the temperatures climb up and that is why we're in the upper 40's once again.

the san mateo bridge is in good shape east and west bound. i spoke with the sergeant's office and they stated that they're in great shape. >> a man in vallejo continues to fight for his life this morning-- after he was found with multiple gunshot wounds near an elementary school. kron four's philippe djegal has more on what has been a violent week in vallejo. >> this is at least the third reported shooting and in the prior two incidents of the victims died. police stated that the details are vague and that is because the witnesses are not cooperating. you concede paramedics are performing cpr. police stated that the man in his 20s was found bleeding at about 2:45 p.m.. along with the vallejo police, the american kenyan

>> santa claus came early sunday at s-f-general hospital. where there are now hundreds of new toys around the tree. the sound of motorcycles filled the air as around 70 motorcyclists rode in, each bringing at least one toy. this marks the 30th annual dudley perkins harley davidson toy run. where motorcycle groups gather to bring toys to the hospital. which will go to inpatient children as well as those in the pediatric clinics. to the community >> it is a beautiful to see this. >> they're just able to enjoy the holidays. >> i think for a lot of them, this is the one gifted they may get to. it means a
